The US Chamber of Commerce, the biggest lobby for corporate America, is considering suing the Trump govt to block implementation of the new tariffs announced by US president, Fortune reported Monday. The global business magazine said it was citing two sources with “direct knowledge of the discussions”.

If the US Chamber of Commerce, which represents millions of US businesses of all sizes, decides to sue, it would provide cover for businesses impacted by the new tariffs but afraid to speak out against the US president’s policy for fear of retribution.

The legal argument to be adopted by the group, funded by some of the biggest names in US industry, was not yet known. But it could argue that Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose tariffs is illegal, Fortune said. A suit along these lines was brought recently by the New Civil Liberties Alliance, a nonprofit, which said the 50-year-old International Emergency Economic Powers Act did not give Trump the right to impose tariffs and that no US president had attempted to do so.
