The nomination was made by President Droupadi Murmu under the powers conferred by Clause (b) of sub-section (2) of Section 3 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, and will take effect from May 14. The official notification was issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice on May 9.
Justice Kant will succeed Justice BR Gavai who is slated to take over as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI).
Justice Kant’s appointment as NALSA chairperson is in line with NALSA’s convention of appointing the Supreme Court’s second senior-most judge to the post.
