INTRODUCTION

In August 2025 , the supreme court of India delivered a landmark judgement that nit only reversed it’s earlier controversial order on mass relocation of stray dogs but laid down a framework rooted in scientific,humane,and substantial principles.
BACKGROUND OF THE CASE
Earlier this month,the court had directed the removal of nearly one million stray dogs from delhi street stand their relocation to shelter to Shelters within eight weeks. The move, however sparked with spread criticism from activists, animal welfare groups,and citizens who termed it a “death warrant” for the animals,given the inadequate infrastructure of shelters and the impracticality of the directive.
THE REVISED JUDGEMENT
On August 22,2025 ,the supreme court modified its stance and issued a more balanced order:
🔹 STRAY DOGS MUST BE :- Sterilized,Vaccinated Deworned,and released back into their original areas.
🔹ONLY RABID
OR AGGRESSIVE DOGS:- may be confined in shelters.
🔹 Municipalities must create designated feeding zones for stray dogs instead of allowing unregulated public feeding.
🔹 The ruling now applies nationwide,with all stray dogs cases in the courts transferred to the supreme court for uniform policy development.
REACTION AND IMPACT
The revised order was welcomed as a “scientific judgement”by animal welfare advocate MANEKA GANDHI , while NGOs stressed the importance of clearly defining “aggressive dogs” and ensuring proper implementation of the animal birth control (ABC) program. Civic authorities, including the MCD, pledged to strengthen strelization drives and set up feeding areas.
SIGNIFICANCE
This ruling marks a turning point in stray dog jurisprudence. It aligns judicial direction with the ABC RULES,2023, balancing public safety with compassion for animals. However, challenges remain, including limited infrastructure, funding shortages, and the ambiguous definition of aggression. The court’s move to expand the issues nationally signals intent to create a uniform, humane,and practical stray dog policy for India.
