The Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) has issued a stern warning to lawyers found promoting themselves on social media platforms, citing violations of professional ethics. In a notice dated August 4, 2025, the Council observed that several advocates have been sharing promotional content, interviews, and even courtroom-related photographs in an attempt to solicit work, which is prohibited under Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules.
The BCD further raised concerns about the growing number of self-proclaimed “legal influencers” who allegedly spread misinformation despite lacking valid legal credentials. The Council has clarified that such actions amount to unethical canvassing and can lead to disciplinary proceedings under Section 35 of the Advocates Act, 1961, which may include suspension or cancellation of the licence to practise.
Advocates have been directed to remove such content from their social media accounts immediately. Failure to comply may result in individual action being initiated against violators.
This move is seen as a measure to uphold the dignity and ethical standards of the legal profession in the digital era.
