About RGSIPL
The Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law, established in 2006, is the first and only law school within the Indian Institutes of Technology. While uniquely positioned to engage with intersections between law and technology, RGSOIPL offers a comprehensive legal education that spans all core areas of law including constitutional law, criminal justice, corporate governance, and public policy.
About the Seminar
On 1 July 2024, three new criminal laws—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)—came into force, replacing colonial-era statutes that had governed India’s criminal justice system for over a century. These reforms were envisioned to modernize the system through digital integration, victimcentric approaches, and procedural efficiency.
One year into this legal transition, it is imperative to assess the practical impact of these statutes. This seminar will examine substantive, procedural, and evidentiary changes under the new codes and highlight emerging jurisprudence and implementation challenges.

- Theme I: Substantive Criminal Law in Transition – The First Year of the BNS, 2023
- Theme II: Overhauling Criminal Procedure – Challenges and Innovations under the BNSS, 2023
- Theme III: Evidentiary Evolution and Adjudicatory Adaptation – The First Year of the BSA, 2023
Seminar Format
- The seminar will be conducted in virtual mode via Google Meet.
- The Inaugural Session will include opening remarks and a keynote address highlighting the purpose and significance of the new criminal codes.
- Three Thematic Sessions will follow, each devoted to one of the new laws— BNS, BNSS, and BSA—featuring expert presentations and moderated discussions.
- An Interactive Q&A will be held after each thematic panel, allowing participants to engage with the speakers.
- The Valedictory Session will conclude the seminar by summarizing key takeaways and forward-looking observations.
- There will be no paper presentations by participants in this seminar.
