St. Xavier’s University is organising a two-day international conference on Convergence of AI, Human Rights and IPR.
About the University
St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SUK), was born out of a vision to create a centre of excellence in higher education in West Bengal. In 2011, Rev. Fr. Dr. John Felix Raj, S.J., and the St. Xavier’s College (Calcutta) Alumni Association conceived SXC Vision 2020, which paved the way for the establishment of SXUK.
About the Conference
St. Xavier’s University Kolkata, Research Development Cell, is organizing a two-day international conference on Convergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Human Rights and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) on June 13th & 14th, 2025.
This conference will serve as a platform for scholars, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to engage in critical discussions surrounding the complex and pivotal inter-section of AI, Human Rights and IPR.
This International Conference will be conducted in hybrid mode, both offline and online, at St. Xavier’s University Kolkata.
AI and Human Rights:
The convergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Human Rights is a complex and critical issue that involves ethical, legal, and social considerations. The intersection of AI and human rights raises concerns about accountability, transparency, ownership and the protection of fundamental rights.
Various sources highlight the importance of ensuring that AI technologies respect human dignity and rights, especially for vulnerable groups like women, children, the elderly and people with disabilities.
One key aspect emphasized in the discussion is the need for a common framework of standards to guide the use of AI in legal contexts, ensuring that human control is maintained over AI systems.
Additionally, the responsibility and accountability for the actions of AI systems ultimately lie with human creators, owners, and operators, even in cases where AI systems autonomously make decisions that impact human rights.
The rapid advancement of AI technologies, including robotics and intelligent artefacts, blurs the boundaries between the human and the machine, raising questions about the implications for human dignity and autonomy.
As AI systems become more autonomous, there is a growing need to address issues related to decision-making processes, ethical considerations, and the potential impact on society as a whole.
Furthermore, discussions around AI and human rights underscore the necessity of developing new forms of governance, fostering informed public debate, and establishing international cooperation to address the ethical and legal challenges posed by AI technologies.
The complexity of AI technologies and their potential to impact various aspects of human life require careful consideration of how to ensure that these systems align with human rights principles and values.
Thus, the convergence of AI and human rights necessitates a comprehensive approach that prioritizes human dignity, accountability, transparency, and ethical considerations in the development and deployment of AI technologies to safeguard fundamental rights and values.
AI and IPR:
The impact of digital technology on society is heightened by the recent emergence of AI in every sphere of life. IPR is no exception. While the convergence of AI and IPR allows the creation of new digital assets, it also complicates the authorship and ownership of AI-generated content.
Furthermore, it challenges the traditional IPR frameworks and policies with regard to IPR creation, management and enforcement. Therefore, it is essential to have a balanced approach to foster IPR innovation as well as to safeguard IPR protection.
A question then arises as to what approach needs to be embraced that will ensure effective protection of IPR while allowing advancements of AI and related technologies.
To answer this important question, this proposed conference aims to bring together leading members of the judiciary, the global academic community, and the private sector to address the interesting and pressing issues that AI raises and its impact on IPR law.
In this context, St. Xavier’s University Kolkata, Research Development Cell, is hosting a two-day international conference on the Convergence of Artificial Intelligence, Human Rights, and IPR.
This conference aims to offer a platform for discussions on the inter-section of artificial intelligence, human rights and IPR, addressing critical issues related to ethics, legal implications, the protection of fundamental human rights and IPR in the context of advancing technologies.
