Delhi State Wetland Authority has submitted a report to NGT, stating that a pond in southwest Delhi was proposed to be listed and was destroyed due to the construction of a highway.
The wetland authority, in a report dated Feb 4, which was made available on March 3, asked the tribunal to seek an explanation from DDA, which was the landowning agency. The response from the wetland authority was prompted by an ongoing case in NGT.
The tribunal took suo moto cognisance of a TOI report dated Sept 30, 2024, titled ‘NHAI has made highway at protected pond site’.
“The present matter pertains to the alleged illegal construction of a highway by National Highways Authority of India that encroaches upon a protected pond in the southwest district of Delhi. This pond is classified as a protected waterbody under Delhi Water Bodies Act. As per the news item, NHAI built Urban Extension Road-II over the pond in Goyla Khurd Village, which was among the list of over 1,000 ponds to be protected. These waterbodies are spread over the entire area of Delhi. These waterbodies are under the management and control of different authorities, which have ownership of the land on which such waterbodies exist,” said the member secretary of the wetland authority.
He added that the wetland authority held a joint inspection, along with officials of revenue department and Delhi Pollution Control Committee, of the pond on Jan 13 and found that the pillars of the flyover were in the waterbody. MSID:: 118687391 413 |
